On Wednesday 7 July, the whole of Year 8 participated in a workshop production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Students have been studying this play in their English lessons this term, and our ‘Dream in a Day’ afternoon was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all their hard work, while giving them a chance to take Shakespeare beyond the page and onto the stage.
Students donned fairy wings, eye-glitter and donkey-heads as they transformed themselves into Shakespeare’s famous Athenians, fairies, and Mechanical characters. Particular mention should go to all those students who had learnt their lines by heart and performed off script – very impressive. We particularly enjoyed the highly comical moments of Bottom’s singing, Puck’s mischief, the lovers’ confusions, and the delightful tragicomedy of Pyramus and Thisbe.
The performance culminated with a typically rousing dance, a vigorous Scottish reel. Well done, all.
