Bringing music to the community

As ever, our musicians have had an incredibly busy term creating and performing at a host of events and concerts. Our Year 5 Junior Choir were delighted to make it to the Grand Final of the GSA Choir of the Year, which took place at King’s High School, Warwick in March. St Mary’s Cambridge scooped the top prize, but our girls put in a magnificent performance, and we couldn’t be prouder. Ending a musical high, they even wowed the public with a ‘flash mob’ performance at Oxford Services! Check out our video clip below.

Year 5’s Tea Time Concert was another highlight, with a beautiful range of solos and group performances including classics such as ‘Smooth Operator’ and modern pop ‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift.

Meanwhile at Senior School, our Classics for Kids programme, part of the Year 11 enrichment stream, provided another wonderful opportunity for our talented musicians and drama students to share their love of music with children aged 0-5 from our local community in a fun and engaging way. This term, they devised a performance based on Julia Donaldson's iconic book 'What The Ladybird Heard', leading little ones on an animal adventure with the tiny ladybird and her farmyard friends as they foil a dastardly plan to save the fine prize cow.

Our annual Spring Concert nicely rounded off the musical performances of the Spring term. Our musicians delivered an exciting showcase of Western Classical music with performances from Senior Choir, Brass Ensemble, Need for Reed and Sinfonia, to name a few! We were also delighted to feature original music composed by one of our GCSE students, all within the beautiful setting of St Alfege’s Church in Greenwich. A huge well done to all our musicians and performers this term! A special mention to our Year 13 Tiana who performed her last ever public performance at Blackheath High before she heads off to take her place at the Royal Academy of Music. Hear from Tiana in her final Head Student Team blog talking about her musical journey at Blackheath High and beyond.

We’d also like to wish luck and love to our wonderful Director of Music, Mrs Butterworth, as she heads off on maternity leave. While she will be hugely missed, the department is in excellent hands with Ms Bond, who is looking forward to continuing to create incredible musical opportunities for all our students.
