On Tuesday 14th March, we welcomed an audience of over 150 parents and students from BHS and other local schools who were treated to an evening of scientific discovery and motivational speeches from six women who lead in their scientific fields. The “Women in Science” event brought together female speakers from, UCL, Imperial College, and Cambridge University as well as professionals working in dentistry, nutrition and geophysics. Each scientist gave a speech on their specialised subject, all of which focused on the creativity of a career in science and the importance of passion and persistence.
Tom Cannon, Head of Careers, was delighted that four of the speakers were also former Blackheath High School students, saying “It is wonderful to see how our students have flourished at university and beyond, succeeding in science focused careers, where women are still under-represented. I’m very proud of their achievements and also delighted that they are so keen to return to the school to help inspire current students. We are very proud of the fact that GDST schools like ours are defying the national trend of low numbers of female scientists, by providing powerful role models. ”
Following the speeches, everyone adjourned to the school’s Sixth Form Centre for a networking reception. Guests were joined by representatives from the Engineering Department from Brunel University who, along with the guest speakers, engaged with Blackheath High students and guests from neighboring St Ursula’s Convent School, Greenwich Free School and Deptford Green School, answering their questions on pursuing a career in science.
