On Tuesday, 30th April, Blackheath High Senior School hosted the biannual SENCO forum on the subject of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
The SENCO forum comprises a number of SENCos (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) from schools across London, both GDST and non-GDST, who come together to share information and best practice.
We were delighted to have Dr. Rachael McCarthy, a clinical psychologist who works for the NHS as our guest speaker who ran an interactive workshop on the features of ADHD, the gender differences of this condition, the myths surrounding it, and most importantly, the strategies which teachers and SENCos can adopt to help pupils with ADHD. A Teaching Assistant from the Junior school also gave a testimony on what it feels like to be a parent of a child with ADHD which really pulled at our heart strings, and gave us a valuable insight into the parental perspective.
Feedback from the other SENCos was really positive including comments that the forum was ‘incredibly informative’.
We are looking forward to hosting another one in the future.
