On 27th February, the Sixth Form enjoyed one of the most eagerly anticipated and exciting Wollstonecraft lectures to date. We welcomed Dr Ezrow, a Professor of Political Sciences at the University of Essex, to talk to us about why Donald Trump came to power, and what he will be able to do with this power in the future.
After briefly describing the process of the American elections, Dr Ezrow engaged in a debate and answered our questions about what lies in future for America, and also, the rest of the world. Teaching us about the ‘filibuster,’ Dr Ezrow illustrated that Trump’s presidential power is actually quite limited and so it is unlikely that there will be drastic changes in the politics and laws of America. Moreover, the Professor explained to us about previous American Presidents and how there is a ‘pendulum style cycle’ between the power of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. All in all, Dr Ezrow successfully and captivatingly highlighted the reasons and concerns surrounding a Trump Presidency; we learnt a great deal beyond the recent headlines.
