“If you write a book about modelling, I’ll buy you a drink”, Holly Smale‘s friend said to her… and she did just that! On 27 February, Holly Smale came to Blackheath High School to talk to us about her amazing 'Geek Girl' book series, which has sold more than 1.1 million copies (although she still has not received that drink you know!).
At lunchtime, Holly started with a book signing where she signed copies of her books, answered our questions and was happy to pose for photos with us. Some of us were then lucky enough to attend a creative writing workshop with Holly, along with some other girls who are interested in becoming writers. She taught us tips and tricks to help bring our stories to life. She told us about an 8-step arc, which will help us to develop our plotting and writing skills, along with adding emotional truth from what we have experienced to make our stories more realistic.
Holly finished the day by giving a talk to some of Year 7, 8 and 9 in the Theatre. She told us how she decided that she wanted to be a writer from the age of 5 but did not have her first book published until she was 30. She was so entertaining to listen to; her stories made us all laugh!
Sadly, the day ended and Holly had to leave, but not before having an audience with our small group. She was so friendly and approachable. She finished by telling us a secret. She has been approached to turn her books into a film - how exciting! Unfortunately, the writers want to set it all in America. For anyone who has read 'Geek Girl', it is so English. Looks like we will have to wait a little longer for the film.
