At Blackheath High Juniors, we are proud of the broad range of clubs and additional activities that we offer. Our girls all learn French as part of our rich curriculum; however, they also have the opportunity to learn an additional language such as Italian or Spanish after school. Our Italian Club is open to girls in Years 3, 4 and 5. Although no prior knowledge necessary, an enthusiasm to learn a new language and culture is always desirable.
In Italian club, the emphasis is on having fun and learning a new language through songs and games. We have been learning how to introduce themselves in Italian and talk about our likes and dislikes. We can now count to 20 and recognise colours. However, the girls have all agreed that the most important lesson so far has been learning how to order a pizza and to choose our favourite flavour of ice-cream in Italian!
Our girls decide to join Italian Club for a variety of reasons. Emily joined so that she could practise her new language skills on holiday this summer. According to Emily: “Italian Club is fun because you can learn how to order food in an Italian restaurant and everyone in Italian Club is very friendly”. Nadya is learning to sing a song in a foreign language for her Grade Three Singing exam and Amelie enjoys impressing her family by speaking to them in Italian.
This term, we are focussing on discussing our families and learning about how Christmas and the New Year are celebrated in Italy. The girls are looking forward to learning some new songs and writing their Christmas cards in Italian!
