Our first term back at Blackheath High has been a busy one for the Music Department! We kicked off with the Long Note Competition, an annual tradition for our wind students to compete to see who can play the longest note on their instrument. This year we had entries on clarinet, flute, recorder, and even kazoo - our winner was Elizabeth in Year 9 from Morden House who played a spectacularly long note on harmonica coming in at 39.50 seconds. Congratulations Elizabeth!
September also saw Blackheath High’s Open Morning, an opportunity for many of our girls to experience the thrill of a public performance. It was a busy morning with performances by students in reception to welcome visitors, rock and jazz band performances in the Quad, plus appearances by our Year 7 choir, and performances by Year 13’s Tiana on harp and the Vocalise chamber choir during the Head’s talk. The girls all performed very well and represented the Music Department with confidence and passion for their craft.
Our first Teatime concert of the year saw six wonderful performances, including a duet from ‘Wicked’ by Year 10’s Mia and Beth, complete with props! These Teatime Concerts are a brilliant opportunity for the girls to perform in a relaxed and supportive environment. It is always a joy to experience what the girls have been working on, and to see them build their confidence in a more informal recital setting.
To end this half term, we are looking forward to the annual House Music competition which will be taking place on the last Friday before the break as a fun end to the term. This year’s theme is Taylor Swift, so we’re expecting a myriad of inspiring performances from all the categories which include Popular Song and Musical Theatre, Guitar, Duets, two Piano categories, and many more. There will also be the House Music videos created by the girls as collaborations between all years to produce a fun, upbeat film to go along with the theme. Each winner of their category will receive house points and then compete against the other category winners to find our House Music Champion who will receive the House Music trophy!
We’re also looking forward to our Autumn concert which will be taking place on Tuesday 5 November, as soon as we get back from the half term break, so don’t forget to practice over the holiday!
