Immersing themselves in British Science Week, our Senior ‘girls in stem’ got hands-on with some great workshops and events: starting with a ‘Super Cells’ science show at the Royal Institution and a deep dive into ‘what makes us sick?’. Our very engaging Royal Institution presenter used their own cells to explore how bacteria and viruses invade our bodies and try to take over, and more importantly: what can we do to fight back. From ancient remedies to modern medicines, students got to see how science supports and improves our bodies’ natural defences, from antibiotics to vaccines, to a future where we could train our bodies to potentially cure themselves of some diseases. Imagine that!
Other Science Week events included: KS3 posters of inspirational women in STEM; Year 9 making a huge and very colourful Pi Day paper chain, starting with the first 80 digits; some very tasty, albeit blue (!) treats from our talented caterers; and a wonderful end to the week with class quizzes and some home experiments to take away for the weekend.
