A group of 29 Year 10 & 11 Art and History students spent four days in Berlin during the half-term holiday in order to experience the wealth of historic and cultural attractions that exist in this city.
They had opportunities to visit many places including Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate and the Stasi Museum plus several of Berlin’s top contemporary art galleries such as the Hamburger Bahnhof and Berlinische Galerie. We also found time to sit and sketch some of the city’s impressive architecture, including the Berliner Dom (cathedral). A particular highlight would be experiencing the ‘Berlin Bunker’, a Second World War air raid bunker that had been converted into a cutting-edge gallery housing the private collection of the Boros Foundation. Both the building itself and the art collection were fascinating.
Throughout the trip, the group encountered a really diverse range of stimulus and influences, all of which provided valuable insight and gave students opportunities to increase their knowledge and understanding in either one or both subject areas.
We covered a lot of ground in our efforts to visit as many attractions as possible and the hard work, enthusiasm and good nature of all the students (despite the 3.30am start on the first day) made this visit thoroughly enjoyable. Many thanks to both Mrs Gilbert and Mr Crozier for assisting on this trip.
