Every year to mark the European Day of Languages, Blackheath High School invites local primary schools to participate in a day of language taster sessions.
The European Day of Languages stems from the Council of Europe’s belief that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and that plurilingualism should be celebrated throughout Europe – sentiments that we share at BHS. The pupils have the opportunity to experience French, Spanish, German and Mandarin lessons whilst gaining an insight into what life is like at Senior school. Pupils are set challenges in different languages, play games and use interactive programmes in our languages lab to explore how a foreign language works and how they can improve their communication.
This year we welcomed 60 pupils from five local schools and all the girls really threw themselves into the day and its activities with great enthusiasm. It was a pleasure to have the girls with us in the MFL Faculty and we look forward to hosting another group of pupils next year.
