From an animal workshop to intense Maths puzzling and a cultural treasure hunt in the heart of London, it was another adventurous schedule of events for Trips Day at Blackheath High Senior School.
Year 7 went animal crazy with a visit from a mobile zoo at the school's sports field. Students had the chance to meet a variety of animals up close and attend workshops on biological classification, adaptations and habitats. They also had the opportunity to complete an art activity based upon their animal encounters!
Meanwhile, Year 8 got their heads together for a Maths and Computer Science Day. They spent the morning solving number puzzles, doing practical probability experiments, working on geometry and getting hands-on experience of making polygons by folding paper and looking at their properties. In the afternoon, our girls then travelled to Shoreditch to visit the White Bear Yard, a modern office building housing a number of start-up technology companies. They met one of the directors of the White Bear Yard who has worked for a number of large tech companies (including Skype and Facebook) who shared her experiences of working in the technology sector as a young woman and the exciting opportunities it offers. The students also got to meet the companies based in the building to find out more about what they do and the skills they use. Successful companies such as BuzzFeed, Full Throttle and GoSquared started their business journeys at the White Bear Yard.
Year 9 headed to the countryside to either complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award or enjoy a day out in the countryside. The girls learned map reading skills, orienteering and the Countryside Code.
With the future on their minds, Year 10 visited the University of Sussex as part of their careers education with the aim of gaining an insight into what it is like to be a university student. The visit included a guided tour of the campus and talks by student ambassadors. After the visit, the girls went to Brighton Pier to enjoy lunch on the seafront.
For their final Cultural trips day of the academic year, the Sixth Form enjoyed a cultural treasure hunt in London. The girls took the river bus to Embankment before working in small groups to hunt down the answers to our cultural quiz in the National Gallery, around Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.
