On the 22 November, four Blackheath High students went to Ravens Wood School in Orpington to compete in the UKMT Senior Team Challenge. Our team was made up of four Sixth Form girls: two Year 12s and two Year 13s and we were competing against 33 other schools.
The competition was made up of three rounds, each of which come with various different challenges (all Maths based of course!). For the first round, we had 40 minutes to complete a set of 10 questions which had various levels of difficulty. Between the four of us, we managed to complete the task and achieve 8/10, placing us in a good position for the next two rounds.
For the second round, we were given a crossword made up of numbers instead of letters and we had to answer 20 questions. We needed to rely on teamwork in order to complete this challenge as every pair had different answers that contributed to the crossword and enabled us to figure out answers based on answers from a previous question.
In the last round, every group had to complete a series of questions as a tag team - the Year 12 pair would pass their answer onto the Year 13 pair and vice versa to complete a set of questions.
Overall, our team placed 11th out of 33 which was impressive considering the number of schools there. It was a really great experience because we all got to improve skills through Maths; meet new people, and improve our team working and problem-solving skills under pressure. Although we did not win, we took a lot from the event and next year, will perform even better!
