Wollstonecraft and the effect of mobile phones

This week, the Wollstonecraft lecture was delivered by Rosie Jenkins from Imperial College. Rosie studied Biomedical Sciences before completing a Master's in Public Health and is currently working as a researcher for SCAMP, a government funded research project looking at the effect of mobile phones on adolescents.

Rosie explained that whilst mobile phones and other wireless technologies have rapidly become central to our children’s everyday lives, scientists remain uncertain as to whether children’s developing brains are more vulnerable than adults to the radio frequency waves emitted from these devices. Rosie also spoke about her decision to enter the field of Public Health, illustrating some of the alternative career paths and options available for young women who enjoy science. She gave us a brief history of the Public Health sector and epidemology before explaining the SCAMP project in depth. Some Blackheath High students have taken part in this study; the largest in the world to date addressing this research question.
