Coming up to the Senior School is always exciting for our Junior pupils – especially when they get to experience a whole morning of taster lessons followed by lunch with their big ‘sisters’! The Year 4 Explore taster morning earlier this term started with a walk across the Heath to the Senior School, where pupils were met by some of our Year 7 ambassadors. They then experienced three taster lessons with our specialist Senior School teachers, beginning with Design Technology (DT) with Mr Masters, who challenged pupils to explore the Blackheath High School logo before creating their own design for a fridge magnet. Mr Masters helped pupils think differently about design, where there is no such thing as a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer and perfection is not required for success!
Next up was Spanish, one of the four modern language options at the Senior School – Ms Knowles led some lively versions of simple Spanish songs, exploring basic vocabulary and concepts, including masculine and feminine word endings, which many pupils related to their French lessons.
And to finish, a real challenge with some Economics! Usually an A-level subject, Mr Sodhi and Ms Wilson created an age-appropriate lesson that explored the basic principles of goods and services (which girls linked to their understanding of bartering in Ancient Egyptian society), supply and demand, and even ‘price equilibrium’. Year 4 were engaged throughout, asking intelligent questions and building links to subjects they have studied.
Discussing their morning on the walk back to the Junior School, Ms Patel reported that lunch was not the only highlight of the day for our pupils – the highest possible accolade!
Thanks for your excitement and participation, girls!
