The Blackheath High School Debating Society recently held a mock election mirroring the 2017 General Election.
The London school, which aims through such exercises to encourage students to think for themselves and pursue knowledge and creativity, believes students can develop life and work skills such as advocacy and public speaking. The activity also exposes them to a wide range of viewpoints and opinions, allowing them to practice critical evaluation techniques.
The result was a landslide for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party.
Winning Debating Society speaker, Year 10 student Matilda Marcus of Greenwich, included some of the key Labour election pledges from the June 2017 campaign in her speech, in particular the abolition of university fees - which appeared to be the vote winner for many of the students.
She was also the lucky, surprise recipient of a Jeremy Corbyn campaign t-shirt, which was very gratefully received.
Matilda is aiming to run for the UK Youth Parliament www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk and is hoping to represent Labour for the Greenwich & Woolwich district. Perhaps a future political career beckons? Watch this space..
