Back to Jurassic times for Reception

October is Black History Month, and both Junior and Senior Schools enjoyed a truly wonderful celebration.
At Junior School, we have been honouring pioneering black figures throughout history including engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut Mae Jemison; Olympic gymnast Simone Biles; honorary Mighty Girl Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock; and actress, director and activist, Aïssa Maïga. Our Junior pupils have engaged in assemblies, quizzes, books and more; and our talented Head Chef cooked up a variety of delicious BHM inspired African and Caribbean recipes. Do try out some of the recipes at home over half term - downloadable from our website until November.
Meanwhile at Senior School, our History department led on inspiring and engaging students with activities including:
Promoting English Heritage’s Blue Plaque London Black History Month Treasure Hunt, to find the blue plaques of key black pioneers of our time – from musicians to politicians, neurologists to footballers
Launching a competition to propose a new plaque for BHM to honour a new hero. The theme of this year’s Black History Month is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ and each participating student has been invited to submit a 200-300 word proposal by Monday 4 November. Students are encouraged to take part, there is still time!
Turning our Theatre into a cinema for a screening of the brilliant biopic ‘Hidden Figures’ – the story of African-American mathematicians Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who worked at NASA in the 1960s and served as the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit
