Celebrating our Sports Heroes

A thrilling Years 1-3 Junior School Sports Day

Despite the overcast weather, we had some bright moments and a fantastic day for the Years 1-3 Sports Day.

The event was filled with excitement as the girls showcased their skills in various activities: demonstrating balance and control in the egg-and-spoon race, agility in the sack race, accuracy in the bean bag throw and hit the wicket, speed in the hurdles, and power in the speed bounce and standing long jump.

It was wonderful to see so many of our families cheering on the pupils and participating in the adult egg-and-spoon race, water race, and the thrilling tug-of-war. The enthusiasm and support from our community added to the joyful atmosphere of the day.

The final results on the day were:

  • 1st place: Meridian

  • 2nd place: Vanbrugh

  • 3rd place: Paragon

  • 4th place: Morden

We hope you all enjoyed the event and look forward to another exciting sports day next year!”

Paragon seals the deal for Juniors Sports Day

Years 4-6 Sports Day was filled with energy and excitement as the girls developed their skills and excelled in various events across the running, jumping, and throwing zones. In the running zone, the girls demonstrated incredible resilience, while in the throwing and jumping zones, they displayed impressive power. All the girls put in a massive effort to show off their skills to their parents, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Our brilliant Blackheath High community cheered on the girls with much enthusiasm and got stuck into the adult races with much gusto – including the obligatory egg-and-spoon, water race, and the thrilling tug-of-war.

The final results were very close, but when adding in all the results from the Reception to Year 3 Sports Days, the standings were as follows:

  • 1st place: Paragon

  • 2nd place: Meridian

  • 3rd place: Vanbrugh

  • 4th place: Morden

We hope you all enjoyed the event and look forward to another exciting sports day next year

And winner of the House Shield at Seniors Sports Day...

We had an absolute blast at Senior School Sports Day – we covered every sport quite literally under the baking sun – from rounders and athletics relays to shot put and everything in between. The proud winners of the House Shield were Paragon – with Meridian winning the Overall Athletics Track & Field.

There were a fair few records smashed too (see below). Well done to all our Sports Heroes and huge thanks to our unstoppable Sports Department and teachers.

London Youth Games

Well done to all students, and also staff, who took part in the recent London Youth Games. Here are some of our participants.

  • Swimming - Hannah in Year 9 competed in the London Youth Games Swimming races with her relay team placing 4th overall. Hannah has also competed in the Kent Borough competitions and Regionals, two races each, 50m freestyle and backstroke.

  • Cycling - our cycling team individually competed for the Lewisham and Greenwich boroughs in the Female Time Trials and secured some great placings: Year 10 Andrea Gil (7th), Year 9 Charlie (8th), and Year 8 Emma (11th). They raced hard among some tough competition. The Blackheath High team girls will also now individually compete in the upcoming British Cycling National Youth Omnium Series (Youth Omnium Championships) to be held at the NCC Manchester Velodrome - 13 July.

  • Hockey - Miss Morrell coached the Greenwich Borough Hockey team in the London Youth Games at Lee Valley. They had a tough pool in the morning, went into the plate competition in the afternoon and placed third at the close.

Sports Awards

We were thrilled to gather this week to celebrate the outstanding achievements and dedication of our students in the world of sports over the past year and were honoured to have Shona McCallin MBE as our guest speaker. Shona, who is an Olympic gold medallist in field hockey, having represented Great Britain with distinction, has had a remarkable career - testament to what can be achieved with hard work, determination, and a never-give-up attitude. Shona is a great role model for our girls.

Sport is much more than physical activity; it embodies the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence -qualities that our students have demonstrated in abundance, both on and off the field. Whether it's the early morning practices, the intense training sessions, or the thrilling competitions, our athletes have shown remarkable commitment and passion.

The evening's awards honoured our sports players in a number of categories across the age groups such as Rising Star, Shining Star, Breakthrough Player, Player of the Season and more - with a number of special awards including a Lifetime Recognition Award presented to Amirah (Year 13) and Melissa (Year 10) who was honoured with Sportswoman of the Year.

Huge congratulations to all our inspirational award winners!

Other sporting news

Individual shout-outs to some of our Sports Scholars & Sporting Heroes on their achievements this year:

A huge well done to:

  • one of our youngest Sports Scholars, Sienna in Year 7, who has taken the diving world by storm! She won the Skills section of her age group for both the North East and South East. Sienna now moves on to Nationals in July and we wish her all the luck.

  • Year 9 Sports Scholar Georgia on her amazing hockey achievements this season - U14&U16 National Indoor medals, U14 National SupraLeague Finalist and Ladies Tier 4 National Champions, County Captain for South London U14 and selected for the U18 GDST Select team.

  • Nancy in Year 10 who has been selected for the long squad for the U17 Netball Ireland team and now has the potential opportunity to head to the Euros in 2025.

  • Ella in Year 10 who, whilst also qualifying for the English swimming nationals, will go on to represent Scotland at the Nationals this week. Ella will be racing in the 200 Fly, 100 Fly and 50 Fly.

Cricket

  • Congratulations to Reese (Year 11) and Grace (Year 8) who were selected for the GDST Select Cricket team this year and played a brilliant match against the MCC last week, coming away with a victory.

  • We had a very successful day of Cricket at the GDST U11 Cricket Rally! After an early start for some of the Year 5 & 6 girls, as they made their way to Northampton High GDST school for the U11 Cricket Rally. The first couple of games didn’t go as planned, however after some team talks, strategies and reshuffling of the order of pairs, the success did not stop and Blackheath High went through to the semi-finals of the plate competition. In the end they beat Bromley High thanks to Hattie’s hits out of the boundary area. We then beat Howell’s and won the plate tournament. Thank you to the Year 5 girls who helped the Year 6’s and joined their team for the day. They played above their age group, but you wouldn’t have guessed it.

Swimming

  • On 27 June Year 3-6 ventured to Croydon High for a swimming gala. There were a few nerves and some uncertainty about what was to come, given Croydon’s status as regional champions, but in true Blackheath High fashion, resilience kicked in after a couple of warm-up lengths, and all those nerves disappeared. The girls swam their very best, with a notable performance during the relays, particularly the Year 6 Individual Medley relay team, who came 2nd.

Yoga

  • Year 1 & Year 2 pupils were treated to some Yoga in Multi-sports Club this half term, led by our very capable Year 6 Sports Prefect team – a brilliant, calming way to start the day.

Softball

  • We had an absolutely brilliant softball INSET and coaching session this half term with Will and the Greenwich Giants
