The brand-new Blackheath High School track cycling team was honoured to be invited to compete in the Herne Hill Velodrome (HHV) Inter School Championships this month, competing against a host of other London schools – and absolutely delighted to take first place in the overall competition!
The afternoon of racing for riders from 8–18 was a buzzing event. Racing in a team of three in the ‘Open Girls’ category (for ages up to 18), students Andrea (Year 10), Charlie (Year 9) and Emma (Year 8) beat their older peers to take first place on the podium.
Regular HHV and Olympic Park Lee Valley riders, our students are hugely passionate about this competitive sport and love the variety of races involved in track cycling – at this event, they got to take park in 3-up Team Pursuit, Flying 200, the Keirin, Scratch and Chase Race among others.
We are so proud of our girls smashing it at this competition. With many hours of training and racing each week, they totally deserved the win. We will be keeping an eye on their progress as they start to move up into the Women’s category racing.
For anyone interested in participating or watching track cycling events , as well as festivals and social events, HHHV it is a brilliant community cycling facility in South-East London operated by registered charity Herne Hill Velodrome Trust.
