The annual Year 9 Options Fair is a very popular event, supporting students as they begin to think about their GCSE options. The curriculum here at Blackheath High School allows for breadth and depth of study in a wide range of subjects; it also lays the foundation for the opportunities that follow at A-level. All students study the core subjects of English, English Literature, Mathematics and the 3 Sciences; and a further four subjects can be selected from Modern Foreign Languages (minimum one language), Humanities and the Creative Arts. Within the Science component, a small number of students will also go on to pursue the unique opportunity of studying GCSE Astronomy at the Royal Observatory. Year 9 students also of course have timetabled lessons in Physical Education and PSHHE, as well as the opportunity to choose a course from our Wollstonecraft Enrichment Programme, covering topics such as ‘American Politics’ and ‘Science and Literature’.
With so much on offer it is a difficult decision, so the Options Fair offers the opportunity for students to start focusing in on the subjects they feel most passionate about. They also get the chance to get advice from Year 10 & 11 students who have been through the process and can offer tips and guidance.
Kiki in Year 9 says: “I found the options fair very helpful. We were given the breakdown of the subjects and the learning outcome. It gave me a real idea on what I want to do for my GCSEs. The older students were very helpful and honest. It was lively and full of excitement.”
