As our society continues to grow and change, the importance of wellbeing has never been clearer. It’s at the heart of what helps us flourish and reach our full potential, both as individuals and as a community. As the new Student Representative for Wellbeing at Blackheath High, my mission is to ensure that every student feels supported, uplifted, and able to succeed, no matter the challenges they face.
I’ve already started working alongside the Year 11 wellbeing reps to make mental wellbeing a priority for all of us. For World Mental Health Day this October, we launched a ‘Kindness Calendar’—a month dedicated to small, meaningful acts of self-kindness. My hope is that through these daily reminders, each of us can find a little more balance between school, home, and everything in between. It's about taking those small steps that can help lighten the load of everyday life and allow us to feel better about ourselves.
One of my goals as part of my legacy project is to introduce some early school breakfast days. Spread over a few weeks, these breakfasts are meant to ease the morning rush and help everyone—students and staff alike—start the day in a calm, positive way. I believe a relaxed morning can set the tone for the whole day, reducing stress and making room for more meaningful connections.
Blackheath High is already doing so much to support students’ wellbeing. Our Peer Mentors are always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear, offering personalized advice when it’s needed most. We’re also looking forward to the opening of ‘The Nest,’ a peaceful space where anyone feeling overwhelmed can go to find comfort. Mrs. Booth, our wonderful School Counsellor, will be there, always ready to listen and provide gentle guidance, just like the rest of our caring teachers and older students.
Even with all the incredible support systems already in place, the wellbeing team and I are always thinking of new ways to make sure everyone at Blackheath feels looked after. I’m excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to keep working with our wellbeing reps to make Blackheath High a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive.
