Barbara Russell-Knight

Class of 1966

After BHS, I went on to Furzedown College of Education to train as a Primary School Teacher, attaining my Certificate in Education in 1969. I became a Licensed Reader in the Diocese of Rochester/ Church of England in 1979 and had a Ministry lasting 30 years in Parishes, Hospitals and Mental Health Care. I achieved my Bachelor of Education in 1982 having studied for three years, two nights a week during term time at the same time as teaching full time in the day. I also have a Certificate in Humanities and I am a qualified Teacher of the Deaf. I married in 2000 and was widowed soon after. I retired early on health grounds, and since then I have travelled extensively.

This year, for the first time, I travelled independently in the USA. I arrived at Brooklyn Port on Queen Mary 2 and spent three days there using public transport to explore New York, then boarded the train for Washington and did the same there for a further four days. Next I travelled to SW Virginia and enjoyed time with friends, touring the wonderful scenery of the Shenandoah Valley. What a wonderful experience at the age of 76!
